Steep, narrow mountain roads alternate with modern asphalt roads in this mountain state. People seem to be happier, but also much poorer than in South Africa. It looks like the government has launched a development toward modern times, which works sustainably. The vast mountain landscape and the white plastic boots will stay in our mind for ever. We noticed that apparently everyone wears these white boots and on our request we were told that they are qualitatively better than the black ones.

More information about the video content bellow: 1. Maseru is the capital and largest city of Lesotho. The city was established as a police camp and assigned as the capital after the country became a British protectorate in 1869. 2. Sehlabathebe National Park was added to the World Heritage list in 2013 as the immediate neighbour of South Africa’s uKhahlamba National Park (which is also in the Unesco club). Together, the pair makes up Maloti Drakensberg World Heritage Site. 3. Lesotho is land-locked. In fact, Lesotho is a country within a country, surrounded on all sides by South Africa. Specifically, it lies around 410 km south of Johannesburg – or 50 minutes by aircraft. 4. Lesotho is ruled by a constitutional monarchy and is one of the 3 remaining kingdoms in Africa (the others are Morocco and Swaziland). King Letsi III is the reigning king of Lesotho since 1996. 5. The lowest point above sea level in Lesotho is 1400 metres, making it the country with the highest low point in the world. Nearly two thirds of the country consists of mountains. The lowlands (1500 – 1800 m) consist of 15%, the foothills (1800 – 2200 m) are also 15% and the mountains (2200 – 3000 m) take up two thirds of Lesotho. 6. You would not immediately associate Africa with snow, but Lesotho is home to the highest ski resort in Africa. Afriski is situated at 3050 metres above sea level. Lesotho is home to the highest altitude pub in Africa at 2874 metres above sea level. 7. Lesotho has practically 100% renewable electricity, thanks to the Lesotho Highlands Water Project. The network of dams exports water to South Africa, and provides almost all of Lesotho’s power needs through hydroelectric energy along the way. On my second day driving around, I smashed into a rock and bent the rim of my tire. Luckily, I got some help and eventually continued on my way. I ended the day at a place in Lesotho called Semonkong. I came here to photograph a waterfall called Maletsunyane. It's the number one reason I came to the country, and though it would be even more spectacular if the water levels were higher, it's still impressive.

The Kingdom of Lesotho is often described as one of the poorest countries in the world. In addition to continued political instability, the nation is facing many serious social problems. Poverty and unemployment rates are high, violent crimes are common, and there are many reports of rape and abuse against women. With 25 percent of the people identified as HIV-positive, Aids/HIV rates are among of the highest in the world. But there are also sources of stability and wealth: Most people in Lesotho own their own land and their own homes. They speak the same language and share the same religion. It is a democratic country where people have a chance to express their views, and they have a king who is willing and anxious to help - if only they let him. Unlike the other African monarchies in Morocco and Swaziland where the king plays an important role in politics, Lesotho is a constitutional monarchy with a king whose powers are largely ceremonial. "I have no constitutional powers to intervene in public affairs or settle disputes that may arise between different political factions or between sections of the population and their political leaders. So it does cause, sometimes, a bit of a problem or a frustration on my part," King Letsie III of Lesotho tells Al Jazeera. But that may be about to change. In a conversation with Al Jazeera, the king suggests he is ready to play a larger role in politics - but under certain conditions. "I'm committed to the principles of a constitutional monarchy. However, if there is a view among the population that I could have a role in one way or another - there is a process of reform that is about to begin, reforming the Constitution ... if the people say this is what we want, then I am ready for it," the king tells Al Jazeera. "But we must be careful that ... we don't surrender the principles of the constitutional monarchy, and we do not, at the same time, try to usurp the powers of the elected government. So it will have to be a very balanced exercise.... but in the end, it depends on the views of the people and the leadership." So what is next for the landlocked Kingdom of Lesotho and its king? King Letsie III talks to Al Jazeera about political instability and reforms, the HIV epidemic, the controversy surrounding Katze dam, and his special relationship with Robert Mugabe. http://shawnvanzyl.com/ http://visitlesotho.travel/ The hidden kingdom of Lesotho holds many wonders, some ancient some new. I have had the pleasure of exploring the baron landscape, experiencing the culture and witnessing the beauty that the country has to offer. Lesotho is the highest country in the world, and is the only country in the world to be landlocked by another, South Africa. Previously known as Basotholand, Lesotho declared independence from the United Kingdom on 4 October 1966. About 40% of the population lives below the international poverty line of ZAR R16.70 / US $1.25 a day. Today, Lesotho is home to amazing spectacles and is growing in tourism, with guests from around the world, exploring the wonders such as the worlds highest commercial abseil at 204m in the South, to a fully fledged ski and snowboard resort in the North. No matter where you go, you will discover incredible things. Big thanks to: Afriski Mountain Resort http://afriski.net/ Rainmaker Logistics http://www.rainmaker.co.za/

A bit of the traffic in the downtown area of Maseru, the capital city of Lesotho. We're coming back from just being sworn-in by The US Ambassador to Lesotho. Like any other rush hour in any other City, it's a cluster-f. 'Cept on the wrong side of the road and no other road rules I can discern. Ntate "Fingers" is our driver for this little ride.

The 10th Parliament of Lesotho reconvened Friday from a winter break, and immediately escalated into heated and almost physical altercations. The government and opposition parties were at loggerheads with the latter demanding a retraction from the Prime Minister Thomas Motsoahae 'Tom' Thabane. The border between Lesotho and South Africa is 909 kilometres (565 mi) long and forms a complete loop, as Lesotho is an enclave entirely surrounded by South Africa. The border follows the Caledon River, the drainage divide of the Drakensberg mountains, the Tele River, the Orange River, the Makhaleng River, and a series of hills joining the Makhaleng back to the Caledon.

The journey across the Kingdom of Lesotho was one of the most beautiful experiences on our first part of our trip thru Africa.
